MOVIE- I AM LEGEND FEATURING WILL SMITH
There are few actors who can hold the big screen on their own for an hour. The list gets even shorter when you ask whether it's an actor who you would want to watch on the big screen for that length of time. In the new film I Am Legend, Will Smith certainly makes the short list.
Smith stars as Robert Neville, the lone survivor in a post-apocalyptic New York City after bacteria has killed off what appears to be the entire human population. Neville is one of the few who are immune to the bacteria; however, he still searches for any other survivors.
He has a daily routine that he follows methodically, which includes hearty canned meals, a strenuous regimen of exercise, and practicing his golf swing off the wing of a fighter jet—all with his trusted friend Sam, his German shepherd.
Most important is his radio broadcast that acts as an SOS and a call out to any survivors to meet him "at the South Street Seaport every day at midday when the sun is highest in the sky…" Yet it is over a thousand days since he began this ritual … and to no avail. But once the sun begins to set, it is lockdown city. And it appears that he is not alone anymore.
While the Richard Matheson inspired story-turned-film has been done before, such as The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price, and The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston, I Am Legend stands apart. The performance by Smith is of the highest caliber, and the special effects add texture and authenticity to a deserted Manhattan.
Another exceptional element of the film is the theme of being alone in the world and how to cope—and make your way through another day by yourself. Smith is able to bring the audience into this world of solitude and futility, while the supernatural/horror element provides the thrills needed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
